My name is Rene Hostettler and this site is a folio of my web development work. I am a mid level php web developer specialising in Drupal development, site building and theming.
I am passionate about working with open source technologies such as Drupal, PHP, MySql and JQuery and have been working with these for five years commercially. After many years working in the event management and hospitality industry I decided to follow my passion for all things digital media and have a career change. I returned to study a Bachelor of Multimedia/media and loved every minute of it I completed this degree at the end of 2011.
From the beginning of my studies I understood that while formal learning is great on the job experience trumps theory in the fast moving technology arena and I perused every opportunity to build my folio through paid and voluntary freelance work concurrently with my studies. This led to me being offered a 12 month internship in 2008 as a technical web designer with a fantastic not-for-profit organisation Infoxchange Australia. During this internship I was exposed to Drupal(version 5) as Infoxchange was migrating from an in-house to open source solution. I was instantly hooked and fascinated by Drupal, while I had been exposed to other CMSs such as Wordpress and Mambo the flexibility of Drupal through core and contributer modules such as taxonomy, views and cck led me to make it my CMS of choice.
On return to my studies after my internship I was engaged by pixel ink media as there part-time front-end developer and Drupal site builder where I gained valuable experience building pixel perfect designs for high end consumer and corporate sites. The following year I was recruited by a Drupal based website agency Fast Design initially as a Drupal themer and site builder but as it became apparent that it was very difficult too find Drupal developers I was given the opportunity to work on many sites that needed custom modules developed. I gained extensive experience working with Ubercart during my three years building many e-commerce sites and creating bespoke solutions to overcome limitations of Ubercart. I also assumed a position of leadership as we grew to 7 staff members taking on responsibility for trainning designers and site-maintainers in theme development and general Drupal/CMS usage.
In October of 2012 Fast Design was wound up and I took the opportunity to spend a couple of months travelling in far north queensland.
Currently I am working freelance and am available for work for short to medium term contracts 3-4 days a week. Please get in touch through my contact us form or email renejhostettler at gmail.com
